Abstract

Performance analysis is a key component of modern football, driven by technological advancement and integration within multidisciplinary teams. However, limited research has explored how analysts implement technological processes in applied settings. This study investigated the technological workflows, analytical practices, and professional perspectives of football performance analysts. A mixed-methods cross-sectional survey was conducted with 38 analysts working in professional and semi-professional contexts. Data were collected via an online questionnaire examining workflows, responsibilities, collaboration, and perceived challenges and future developments. Quantitative data were analysed descriptively, while qualitative responses underwent reflexive thematic analysis. Video analysis was central to practice, with opposition, match, and individual analysis identified as primary responsibilities. Analysts utilised both specialised software such as Hudl Sportscode, and general tools, such as Excel and Tableau. Despite technological advances, manual video capture and notational analysis remained prevalent. Multidisciplinary collaboration was common, though not always resulting in fully integrated interdisciplinary practice. Key challenges included workload, working hours, and salary. Future developments were expected to focus on artificial intelligence, automation, and enhanced data integration. These findings highlight the coexistence of traditional and emerging practices, providing contemporary insight into analyst workflows and informing the ongoing development of performance analysis in football.
